Black Bolt and White Flare – differences, cards and products

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: Black Bolt and White Flare

Updated on October 6, 2026.

Black Bolt and White Flare share a theme, but not a card list. Together, they highlight the 156 Pokémon originally discovered in Unova. For the collector, this means a choice: follow one of the expansions or build a project that spans both.

The English special sets began releasing on July 18, 2025, with more products to follow. Here, you will get help distinguishing between the sets and avoiding buying the wrong product for the cards you want to collect.

The difference starts with the card list

Black Bolt is associated with Zekrom and White Flare with Reshiram. However, the choice does not have to be determined by the Pokémon on the packaging. Start by seeing which set contains your own favorite cards.

  • Black Bolt: examples of Pokémon ex are Zekrom ex, Kyurem ex, Meloetta ex, and Genesect ex.
  • White Flare: examples are Reshiram ex, Keldeo ex, and Jellicent ex.

Sort the cards by set even if you collect both. A name, language, and number must match the same edition when you are completing a set or comparing prices.

Unova as a collection goal

If you played Pokémon Black or White, a Unova collection can be a way to return to the region's Pokémon. You don't need to start with a complete set: choose, for example, an evolution line or a smaller selection of favorites.

For a larger project, you can create a list of Unova's Pokémon and mark which expansion the card is in. Place desired illustrations and foil variants in separate columns. Then you can track your progress without confusing “one of each Pokémon” with “all card versions.”

What is Black White Rare, BWR?

Black White Rare is a special rarity with a stylized black or white design. It should not be confused with Illustration Rare or Special Illustration Rare. The abbreviation BWR thus describes a card category, not an expansion of its own.

When searching for a version of Zekrom ex or Reshiram ex, you need to check both the number and the rarity. The fact that two listings have the same Pokémon name does not mean they are showing the same card.

English special sets and Japanese boxes are different products

The English Black Bolt and White Flare have no regular 36-pack booster boxes. Boosters are sold through special product formats, including Elite Trainer Boxes and Booster Bundles.

Japanese editions have a different product structure and can be sold in boxes. Therefore, do not assume based on the word “box” when comparing. Check the language, set name, number of packs, and cards per pack in the product description.

Choose a product in three steps

  1. Choose a card list: is your collection goal in Black Bolt, White Flare, or both?
  2. Choose language: stick to one edition if you want to get a cohesive collection.
  3. Compare the content: calculate the price per pack, but also weigh in promos and accessories that you want.

See Black Bolt and White Flare at Hobbykort. The English release happened in several stages; a product's release date does not necessarily have to be the same as the expansion's first date.

No product guarantees a certain BWR or illustration. If you want a specific card, you can compare a single card with the budget for random openings.

Identify and store the cards

Use the full name, number, language, and variant when searching for a card. Follow the valuation guide if you want to estimate a price based on completed sales.

Binders and albums can make it easy to keep sets separate. Start with soft sleeves and choose toploaders for cards that need sturdier support. For unopened products, there are protective boxes in different formats; always check the dimensions.
