TCG Deck Boxes – what you should know as a player and collector

What is a deck box and why is it needed?

A deck box is a compact storage solution designed to keep a TCG deck together and protected. The cards are placed upright inside the box, preventing bending and reducing friction between cards during transport. For those who play with sleeved cards – which is recommended for all active decks – a deck box is the natural next step to keep the deck organized and easily accessible during gameplay.

Without a deck box, sleeved cards risk being damaged in a bag, mixed up with other cards, or exposed to moisture and dirt. A good deck box solves all of that and makes it easier to focus on the game.

Sizes and capacity

Deck boxes are usually measured by how many sleeved cards they can hold. A standard deck box fits a 60-card deck with sleeves – the most common format for Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering. Commander decks with 100 cards require a larger model, and those who want to store a sideboard, tokens, and extra cards need an XL or double deck box with separate compartments.

Always check if the box is compatible with double-sleeved cards if you use inner sleeves in combination with outer sleeves – this increases the thickness of the cards and requires a box with slightly more space.

Material and construction

Deck boxes are made from three main materials. Hard plastic is the most common and affordable – lightweight, stackable, and robust enough for daily use. PU leather offers a premium feel with softer inner lining and magnetic closures that keep the lid securely shut during transport. Fabric-covered cardboard is an intermediate option with good durability and a more aesthetic appearance.

Models with magnetic closures are preferable for those who transport their deck frequently – they keep the lid closed even if the box tips over in a bag. Simpler snap closures work well for home use but can open accidentally during transport.

Which game suits which deck box?

Standard TCG cards in 63×88 mm format – including Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, and Disney Lorcana– fit in all standard deck boxes. Yu-Gi-Oh!cards are slightly smaller but fit in most standard models with small size sleeves. Always check the product description if you play with a card format that deviates from the standard.

Deck box as part of a complete TCG setup

A deck box works best in combination with the right sleeves. Sleeve your cards with card sleevesin the correct format before placing them in the box – this provides an extra layer of protection and reduces friction against the inner walls of the box. For those who want to store more decks at home, storage boxesare a natural complement that can accommodate multiple deck boxes and loose cards within the same system.
