Magic: The Gathering will feature God Packs starting in 2027 – at the same time, guaranteed foils will disappear from standard boosters and Collector Boosters will contain three fewer cards. The announcement was made on October 5, 2026. The changes begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which according to Wizards will be released on February 5, 2027.
What is important for your next pack purchase is therefore both which product you choose and which set it belongs to. Here, we distinguish between the new content rules, the chance of a God Pack, and what happens if you open one during a tournament.
Play Boosters are being renamed – and the content is changing
Play Boosters will be called Booster Packs. This is a name change, not a new separate product category. Wizards has also announced the following changes:
- Standard Booster Packs: foil commons and uncommons are being removed. Foil is no longer guaranteed, but any foil that appears will be rare or mythic rare.
- Japan Showcase: these special card treatments can now appear in traditional foil in standard packs, where they were previously exclusive to Collector Boosters.
- Collector Boosters: two foil commons and one foil uncommon are being removed with no replacement. The pack will therefore contain three fewer cards.
Wizards also states that the probability of foil rare and mythic rare cards is increasing in standard packs, but does not provide a general percentage in the announcement. According to the company, the changes do not entail an increase in the recommended retail price, MSRP. This is not a guarantee of a specific retail price in Sweden.
What does a Magic God Pack contain?
A God Pack is an unusual booster outcome with many rare and mythic rare cards. It looks like a normal pack and is not a separate product to order.
| Product | Stated frequency | God Pack content |
|---|---|---|
| Booster Pack | 1 in 1,000 | 14 rare/mythic rare cards plus a celebration card |
| Collector Booster | 1 in 300 | 11 rare/mythic rare cards, one foil land, and a celebration card |
This does not mean a guarantee per box or after a certain number of openings. Rarity also does not dictate what the cards will be worth.
The announcement applies to Magic Multiverse sets from Nauctis. God Packs in Universes Beyond are not expected until 2028; this is an expectation, not a promise regarding all future products.
Opening one during Draft or Sealed? Stop first
In Draft and Sealed, you build your deck from cards opened on the spot. A pack full of rares can therefore affect the players' conditions.
Wizards Play Network says the player should stop and call for a judge or organizer. At competitive events, it is recommended that the player keep the God Pack, while the organizer replaces it with an unopened pack from the same set at no cost. At tournaments where Wizards provides the product, such as Regional Championships and the Pro Tour, replacement is mandatory.
At more casual events, the organizer has the option to allow the pack to be included. Therefore, ask how your specific event handles this before starting play.
How to use this information before a purchase
Our assessment is that set and area of use should guide the choice before God Pack odds. Those who are going to play Limited need the right product for the event. Collectors should compare card treatments and actual content, especially when a Collector Booster contains fewer cards.
The announcement does not change the content of older editions. When you compare Magic products, read the description for the specific set. If you are new to the game, our Magic guide for beginners explains the difference between opening packs and starting with a pre-built deck.
