MTG Bundles, Boxes & Starter Kits

MTG Bundles and Starter Kits – what's what and who are they for?

What is an MTG Bundle?

A Magic: The Gathering Bundle is a product format from Wizards of the Coast released with each new expansion. It contains a number of booster packs from the expansion, basic lands in both foil and standard versions, a spindown die for life counting, a storage box, and often an exclusive promo card with alternative artwork. The promo card is unique to the Bundle product and cannot be found in regular booster packs.

Bundles are a cost-effective alternative to buying booster packs and accessories separately. The storage box is made of sturdy cardboard and can hold a large number of sleeved cards – a practical accessory that is used long after the packs have been opened. Foil basic lands are also a valued accessory for deck builders who want a uniform and aesthetically pleasing land package in their decks.

What is an MTG Starter Kit?

A Magic: The Gathering Starter Kit is a product format designed for beginners. It contains two pre-built decks with different color combinations, ready to play against each other right out of the box. The decks are balanced against each other and introduce key mechanics and game logic in an accessible way.

Starter Kits are the natural choice for anyone who wants to introduce a friend or family member to Magic, or for someone who is completely new to the game and wants a structured entry without having to understand deck building from scratch. They often contain a foil promo card and a code for MTG Arena to try the game digitally.

Bundle vs. Starter Kit – which should you choose?

Choose a Bundle if you already know the basics of Magic and want to expand your card pool from a specific expansion. The booster packs provide access to a wide selection of cards, and the promo card is a natural collector's item. Choose a Starter Kit if you are a beginner or want a complete package to play against a friend immediately – without having to buy additional cards.

For those who want an even more complete ready-to-play option with more cards and a stronger strategy, a Commander Deckis the next natural step. The Commander format is the most popular multiplayer format in MTG and suits players who want deeper strategic possibilities.
